Even the boys’ uncle tried to talk reason into Harry: “From time to time, Diana’s younger brother had played something of an honorary godfather to both boys in the years since the death of their mother. Once again Harry refused to slow down. He didn’t blame his uncle. He understood why Diana’s brother should want to help. Yet he was furious with his elder brother for dragging other family members into the row.”

The newest book to lay bare the royal skeletons examines the reported disruption of William and Harry’s rock-solid bond and describes the anger and frustration caused when Harry and Meghan repeatedly snubbed their noses at royal tradition and protocol. It cannot be said that Harry didn’t know better, this had been his life since birth.

According to Lacey, the animosity that Harry introduced into the family was so bad that the queen deliberately chose not to include a photo of the couple and their son Archie in her 2019 Christmas broadcast.

But it is clear from the book that it was William who was the most on guard over Meghan, from the very beginning. And his concern makes imminent sense when you see it through the prism of his role in the monarchy.

The Duke of Cambridge will be the future king and as such his overriding goal is the preservation of the institution. What he saw in Meghan was a disruptive force and so can we all now give him his due, since I doubt we’ll hear him saying, “I told you so,” in public any time soon.

Megxit was the most visible element of Harry and Meghan’s dereliction of duty. But Harry himself reportedly told a friend, after he met Meghan, “I put my arm around my brother all our lives. I can’t do it anymore. We’re separate entities.”
