Piers Morgan Doubles Down On Legal Action Against Earl Spencer Over Diana Memoir

Earl Spencer’s memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, made a lot of allegations about then-Prince Charles, and it also said things about Piers Morgan, who isn’t taking it lightly. On Thursday, he doubled down on his determination to make it a legal fight. Read on for more details.

Legal Action

Piers Morgan discussed his legal action against Earl Spencer during Piers Morgan Uncensored on YouTube.

Morgan isn’t backing down and pretty much he confirmed what was published by Rob Shuter in his Substack Naughty but Nice. The question being asked is if Earl Spencer got facts about Piers wrong, what else is wrong in the explosive memoir?

During his podcast, Morgan said, “It’s official, my legal case against Earl Spencer is going ahead.” He confirmed that his lawyers have formally written to Spencer and his publisher, Penguin, demanding the book be pulled.

The dispute centers on Spencer blaming Morgan for publishing hidden-camera gym photos of Princess Diana back in the 1990s. Morgan pointed out this is flatly false since he didn’t work for the Mirror group until two years after those photos ran.

Spencer’s Response and the King

While Spencer offered a public apology for the error, Morgan reminded his viewers that Spencer termed it a “small error.” 

Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, also took heavy shots at King Charles III. In serialised extracts, Spencer alleged the King sounded “giddily elated, like a lottery winner” right after Diana’s death.

According to The Express, Prince William is reportedly furious about the claims. Royal sources indicate William stands firmly with his father over the allegations.

Former Butler Burrell

Former royal butler Paul Burrell joined Morgan to dispute Spencer’s claims about the King. Burrell saw Charles in Paris right after the accident and shared a very different account.

Burrell said Charles “was a broken man” who was completely devastated. He added, “he walked down the corridor towards me… his eyes were bloodshot and honestly I’ve never seen him like that ever.”

Burrell also challenged Spencer’s account and his knowledge of Diana’s life at the time. He claimed Spencer “was not a regular visitor” at Kensington Palace and that Diana barely spoke to her brother during her final five years.

He added that Diana once told him her family “only want me when they want the best seats in the best restaurants.”

StyleCaster wrote, “Spencer’s publishers are reportedly in “emergency mode” and considering every possible scenario, including disclaimers and even pulling the book if needed.” 

Claims and Counter Claims

Piers Morgan maintains that an apology and correction aren’t enough. The Independent cited a social media post by Piers Morgan where he wrote, “Earl Spencer has apologised to me for his defamatory lies published in his new book, Swan Song, published today.”

But he added, “I am pursuing legal action against him and his publisher Penguin to have the lies removed, and damages paid to the King’s Trust.”

That’s because the book contents claimed that “Mr Morgan was surly and annoyed when Earl Spencer called personally to tell him that he was not welcome at his sister’s funeral.”

The Independent also cited The Times as reporting that “future editions will be edited to rectify the error.” However, Earl Spencer stood by his account that Morgan was “surly and annoyed” when he called the journalist to tell him he was not welcome at Diana’s funeral.
