British Royal family news reveals the Duke of Wales was certainly having the time of his life after hearing the inspiring and uplifting stories told by the young people who received an award during Thursday’s award ceremony, so much so that he lightly made a joke at his own expense. He also urged honorees to take part in a “stiff drink”. The Prince’s Trust Awards Trophy Ceremony took place at St. James’s Palace in London.
Prince Charles Quips About His Position As Heir To The Throne
The Duke, 72, was really moved by the stories of the the young people whose lives have been changed for the better as a result of the award. During his speech, he thanked the event sponsors, and jokingly hinted at his odd
As he told a story about a visit he made to a local T.K. Maxx store a few years back, he said, “I remember there were an enormous number of people who were trying to get in, as they were waiting for me to get out!” He added: “Story of my life”.
Royal commentators were quick to look into those four words and to compare it to Diana’s hint in the years before her death in 1997. Princess Diana had publicly hinted (and reportedly told friends explicitly), that she believed her older son, Prince William, should bypass Charles and ascend the throne as the next King.
It’s also not unusual for the British royals to be humorous, even with self-deprecating jokes. During a June visit with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the 95-year-old monarch was told she was “quite the hit” when the royals had hosted at a G-7 Summit reception – so much so that world leaders were still talking about her the next evening.
When told about her incredible achievement, Queen Elizabeth didn’t waste time in remarking, “Oh, Lord. Were they really?”
Prince Charles Talks Expanding The Prince’s Trust Reach
Celebrity ambassadors were also live at the ceremony, including Oscar nominee Richard Grant, Kate Garraway, Gaby Roslin, Hugh Dennis, Vogue U.K. Editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and Fearne Cotton, who hosted the proceedings.
Charles’ witticisms were mixed in with his passion for the project and the impact it has made on millions of young people’s lives. He also thanked the people who contributed resources in order to make it possible and shared his hopes of expanding the charity to touch the lives of people in other countries.
“When I created The Prince’s Trust in 1976 to help improve the lives of disadvantaged young people, it was because I was so acutely aware of the challenges that they faced,” shared the prince, 72. “Over the years some of the challenges have changed, but the overall mission of giving people self-confidence, self-esteem and better opportunities, remains the same.”
He proudly announced that since its founding, the Prince’s Trust has “helped over one million young people transform their lives and The Prince’s Trust now works in 18 countries across the Commonwealth and beyond.”
When speaking of the Trust’s expansion to the U.S. and the global relationship they’ve been building between many countries in different continents, he added some dark humor, saying, “And before I drop dead, I want to make sure we can get even further!”

He also touched various important points in his speech, especially of the “deeply concerning” job statistics for young people in the U.K. in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He further pointed to areas of opportunity and aspiration – including he and son William’s shared love for finding practical solutions to climate change.
“The Prince’s Trust is determined to help support young people into employment and enterprise in the rapidly changing global market, including of course the fast-growing green economy,” he said.
He then told the young award recipients of how proud he is of their achievements.
He ended his speech on a lighter note, saying, “I hope today’s experience hasn’t been too much of a shock to your system, so that you can recover with a stiff drink at the end!”
