British royal family news shows that Queen Elizabeth’s reign will be celebrated with a Platinum Jubilee this year. The event marks seven decades of service to the nation and it promises to be a grand, once in a lifetime affair.
But make no mistake about it, the 95-year old monarch, who lost her 99-year old husband Prince Philip in April 2021, is not ready to step down just yet. The media has speculated more than once about this possibility but it has been made clear that Her Majesty has no intention of one day randomly handing over the reign to her heir, Prince Charles.
Royal Family News: Prince Charles Will Reign Next
Her son, Charles, the Prince of Wales, is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history. It is only natural to wonder if and when he will take the reins but when of his staffers was caught out doing so their abdication comment reportedly left the queen livid.
Despite the queen’s age and a rare hospital stay in 2021, the palace has insisted that she will not abdicate the throne. Let’s put this situation in context: the queen herself made a vow to remain monarch until her death.
On her 21st birthday she vowed to reign as long as she lives saying, “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.”

That has been interpreted to mean that Prince Charles will become king only after his mother’s death. Obviously Her Majesty takes her duty seriously. Therefore it was frowned upon when one of Charles’ aides thought otherwise. According to royal expert Robert Jobson, “In November 1998, a person never identified was responsible for a spectacularly misguided attempt to burnish Charles’ reputation and enforce his position as heir to the throne.

Royal Family News: Robert Jobson Described an Awkward Moment
He added of the awkward comment, “[It] led instead to the queen’s ire, necessitating an embarrassing climbdown on the part of her eldest son. The queen was appalled to read that a St James’s Palace aide had asserted that Prince Charles would be ‘privately delighted’ if his mother were to abdicate.” Ouch.
According to Jobson, “This was an act of treachery as far as the queen was concerned. Livid, she telephoned Charles who was on an official visit to Bulgaria. He knew nothing about it but agreed with his mother that a joint statement should be issued in which Charles would stress his ‘abiding admiration and affection for the queen.’”
Charles was not able to ascertain who made the ghastly statement and lucky for them as it was reported that “heads would roll” if he did.
