Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly plan to return to live in the UK with Archie and Lilibet, and it’s only natural that many commentators and the general public wonder why they made that rather unexpected choice.
Family and Duty?
Buckingham Palace has not publicly commented on the reported move, but According to the New York Times, the move comes from a desire to reset their base. The couple wants to establish stability across both sides of the Atlantic.
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want Archie and Lilibet to settle into British life. The report claims family ties heavily influenced their decision.
Analysis Of Motivations
The motivations were analyzed on ABC News on YouTube. Host Dianne asked author Victoria Murphy why the Sussex couple would “move now.”

Murphy noted how everything turned around, although she admitted it might not be a sudden decision, as allegedly the couple has been thinking about returning for a while now.
She said, “Well, a lot of shock here today from this news because on the face of it, it’s a complete U-turn on everything that the couple have said since they stepped back six years ago.”
Security Concerns
She spoke about ongoing concerns about security, noting, “They’ve spoken about loving their life in the US” but “Harry has repeatedly cited …concerns over security about coming back to the UK.”
Murphy added that Prince Harry feels a strong calling and he might feel “that he has a role to play here. Not as a working royal but a role nevertheless.”
Murphy believes education and heritage could also have influenced the decision. She said that in her opinion, the driving factor might lie in wanting their kids to enjoy their British heritage. And Prince Harry might want them to “experience education here.”
Security and Logistics
Dianne then asked Victoria what living in a non-royal residence would mean for their security arrangements.
In the opinion of Murphy, they probably wouldn’t make the move if Harry and Meghan didn’t feel comfortable with the security arrangements.
She added, “Clearly he feels happy with the arrangements that are in place.” But it does bring that question back into the spotlight.
Murphy noted that the Prime Minister won’t talk about it because “their security [is] a private matter.”
Reconciliation and Rifts
Dianne asked how the move impacts Harry’s relationship with Prince William, following Harry’s recent reunion with King Charles.
Murphy noted that William and Harry remain distant. She said, “Well, that’s a really big question because of course the brothers are still very much estranged. There’s been absolutely no movement on that front.”
Whether that changes remains to be seen, but with Prince Harry spending more time in the UK, people will focus on that relationship.
Viewers React
The discussion brought mixed reactions from viewers, but some people seem supportive despite some reservations.
One person wrote, “I wish them all the best but somehow I don’t see this ending well.”
Another commenter added, “Hopefully they will not cause further trouble in the UK.”
Then someone else took a different approach, suggesting, “Charles has a better understanding of the line of succession. If George becomes king before he is of age, a Regent should be in place. Just setting the table.”
Another person blamed outside factors, saying, “This shouldn’t be so surprising. The political climate in the US is awful and his father is old and sick.”
The commenter added that wealthy couples with ties to different countries often divide their time between them.
