Prince Harry is committed to his mission of providing a safe space for children online. One of the ways he’s doing this is by openly educating parents on the dangers of the online world and why it is leading to the growing mental health crisis existing among young people today.
Here’s what he has to say about the problem.
Prince Harry Reveals Archie And Lilibet Are On His Phone’s Lock Screen During Keynote Speech
On Sept. 24, Harry took the stage at the Clinton Global Initiative to address the pressing issues of social media inspiring a mental health crisis in young people.
He explained the reason he and wife Meghan launched The Parents Network was for it to serve as “a global community that provides crucial support to parents whose children have suffered from the harmful effects of social media.”
“My lock screen is a picture of my kids. What’s yours?” Harry asked the audience, as pictures of phone lock screens displaying images of young people are shown on the big screen behind him.
He went on to say that “these children and thousands more meant the world to their families. The beautiful faces you see before you, their smiles, their dreams, all lost. All too soon, and all because of social media.”
Harry then credited the young people – who all died by suicide – for inspiring him and his wife to start the Parent’s Network.
He blamed their “mental health issues” on “their digital interactions,” which can simply be “hostile and overwhelming” at times.
“These platforms are designed to create addiction,” Harry said of social media, further claiming that kids are “force fed content that no child should be exposed to.”
Apart from the hostile nature of the online world, Harry pointed out how fake news can sometimes leave children “confused and scared.”
Prince Harry Says Social Media’s Harmful Effects Are “Made By Design”
Prince Harry also blasted the nature of social media in his speech, saying, “Some say kids will be kids and well, that may well be true. Kids may get into trouble. I know a thing or two about that. But our kids are being targeted. The harmful effects of social media are made by design.”
He went on to add: “These platforms are designed to create addiction. Young people are kept there by mindless, endless, numbing, scrolling, being force fed content that no child should ever be exposed to.”
Calling out Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and other social media leaders, he said, “So why do the leaders of these insanely powerful social media companies still refuse to change? Why are we holding them to the lowest ethical standards?”
