Prince Harry’s Upbringing Was “Cruel” And It Made Him Naughty, Royal Expert Claims

Apparently there is much to discuss before Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare” would hit the shelves. Immediately Penguin Random House revealed the title of the book to be “Spare”, there’s been a lot of speculations regarding how close the word hits home for Harry.

Perhaps it wouldn’t have been that hard on Harry if he wasn’t the only “spare”, but some royal experts do believe that being a spare was a kinder choice for Harry than being the heir – at least, now he can chase his dreams anyhow he wants to without being burdened by the yoke of duty. To take it directly from the horse’s mouth, King Charles and Prince William are two “trapped” dudes.

A Resurfaced Interview Explains Princess Diana’s Desire To Treat Prince William And Prince Harry Equally

If you asked Prince Harry, 38, to describe his life in one word and he said “Spare”, you can’t deny that it bears a rather heavy significance on his life.

In a 2020 interview recently resurfaced by Express, royal biographer Robert Lacey defined the impact of the tradition to have “heirs and spares” within the British monarchy on the lives of the, well, spares.

“This story goes right back to when they were children,” the Battle of Brothers author told Good Morning America in 2020.
“And at the age of 6, 7, William suddenly starts becoming more serious. He’s aware of his destiny as a king. Harry goes in the opposite direction.”

Lacey then shared the following: “There’s a story of how he was misbehaving in the back of a car at the age of 4 and his nanny tells him off. And he says, ‘I don’t have to behave. I’m not going to be King.’” As the spare, Harry’s life within the monarchy was less defined, and even though Diana wished he would serve as helper to his brother, he mostly did things that he fancied.

Prince Harry – Was “Typecast” From Birth, Royal Author Claims

As Harry grew, Lacey said that he began to realize that he was “typecast”. “Harry came to realize in his teens that he was typecast as the court jester, the number two,” Lacey explained. “There’s William, standing for duty going ahead down the conventional path. And it’s Harry who strikes out for love, for self-determination.”

Lacey continued, “The British royal system can be very cruel, and it’s particularly cruel to the spare. “This is not the first time we’ve had spare problems, the heir and the spare, Princess Margaret, Prince Andrew. Now, Harry is in the same dilemma.

“They start off in the public eye as playmates, as co-stars with the heir. And what’s their destiny? To be pushed down the line of succession as babies come along, marriages come along. There was trouble with Margaret. There was trouble with Andrew. And now we have the same thing with Harry.” Well, I guess it was a blessing Harry found his way out after marrying former American actress Meghan Markle.
