The Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, will open up a part of their home for schoolchildren who wish to learn more about the Royal Family. It’s been revealed that plans have been submitted for the construction of a two-story education center, which will be an extension to Grade I-listed Queen Anne’s Orangery. There will also be a new garden that will connect the historic building to Prince William and Kate’s West London home.
Queen Anne’s Orangery
The historic building was originally built in 1704 and 1705 for Queen Mary II’s sister, Anne, who eventually became Queen. Reports revealed that the extension will also have a “lunch and afternoon tea restaurant,” catering facilities, and an outdoor terrace for visitors to relax. It is still unknown when the project will be open.
Children Will Get To Learn More About The Monarchy
According to a source, “Wills and Kate want to be able to teach younger children about the monarchy, and with this project are trying to give a positive message.”
“Education is a very important thing and this will be the perfect backdrop for students to learn,” the insider continued.
Historic Royal Palaces, which is the independent charity that manages the buildings, believe that the Orangery Learning Center will be able to teach kids about the history of the Monarchy and how it came to be.
Safe and Secure Teaching Spaces
Director of planning and place, Sue Foster, said that the upcoming learning center will provide teaching spaces “in a child safe and secure environment.”
According to the Royal Household and the Historic Royal Palaces, students are kept engaged through exploration, debate, drama, and creativity. Through their educational program, students will be able to explore the palace, have an immersive experience, and learn through what they call a “history where it happened” initiative.

Critics’ Take On The Royals’ New Plan
But just like everything else in this world, there will always be critics. Graham Smith, from the anti-monarchist campaign group called Republic, believes that this project is “more PR than education.” He added that the teachings would be “sugar-coated” instead of “warts and all.”
The news of a new learning center at Kensington Palace comes after the royals were criticized for their plans to build a basement that will contain office spaces for employees of the Historic Royal Palaces and the Queen’s Dress Collection.
