Princess Diana Princess Diana enjoyed a long term friendship with musician Freddy Mercury but you’ll never guess what these two live wires loved to do together.

Would you believe that watching Golden Girls was the highlight of their meetups?

According to actress Cleo Rocos, Diana and Freddie formed a bond over their love of the classic show which features four mature women getting into comedic entanglements as they live their best lives together.

Rocos says that Diana and Freddy often met up to watch the show, drink champagne and then cause “mischief.”

Princess Diana And Freddy Mercury Loved To Watch Golden Girls Together

Rocos told Vanity Fair that on one occasion she joined the pair for the afternoon, “drinking champagne in front of reruns of The Golden Girls with the sound turned down and improvising show dialogue with a much naughtier storyline.”

Actor Rupert Everett was also present and he discouraged Diana from going to a gay nightclub. Apparently Rupert was worried that the paparazzi would stalk Diana if she went out.

But Freddie reportedly spoke up and said, “Go on, let the girl have some fun.”

Princess Diana And Freddy Mercury Snuck Into Royal Vauxhall Tavern

According to Rocos, the group later snuck Diana into Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a south-London gay bar. Was Diana caught out by the public or the paparazzi? Nope, Diana was cleverly disguised in sunglasses, an army jacket, and a cap that covered her blond tresses.

Rocos remembers, “When we walked in … we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared.” Rocos added that Diana totally loved being out and anonymous in public.

Princess Diana Cherished Being Able To Appear In Public Anonymously

Being anonymous was no longer an option after Diana wed Prince Charles in 1981. Being a princess meant that she was suddenly elevated into being one of the most identifiable women alive, which translated into her being followed at all times by the paparazzi.

It has been said that after her divorce Diana was unable to shake the feeling of being followed. While she apparently enjoyed spending time at her Kensington Palace home, she reportedly came to believe that spy cameras had been placed throughout the residence.

Her biographer, Andrew Morton, says that she talked of the spy cameras to him. “She remembers the occasion well, driving out of the claustrophobia of Kensington Palace with its spy cameras, watchful courtiers, and prison walls to her favorite stretch of beach on the Dorset coast.”
