British royal family news reveals that back in the day a handsome, tall, and athletic Philip, Prince of Greece, did what every young man does when taken by a pretty young woman—he showed off!
Prince Philip died today at the age of 99 but during his first publicized meeting with his future wife, Queen Elizabeth, the smitten teen tried to impress her by jumping over a set of Dartmouth college tennis nets.
She must have been equally infatuated with the eager to please blonde youth because they eventually married, had three children together and remained united for 73 years.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth went to Dartmouth with their two daughters and that was where Philip, then 18, and the 13-year-old Elizabeth had their first official meeting in July 1939. From that time forward they maintained a correspondence and met on several occasions.

Philip spent Christmas 1943 with the Royal Family at Windsor and at the end of the war the media were speculating about their relationship. Not everyone was as thrilled with Philip as Elizabeth was however. Old-school palace aides were said to be concerned that he was not a traditional English gentleman, even though he had fought for Britain in the Navy.
Despite what aides may have thought, it was too late by then as Philip and Elizabeth were in love. It is suggested that they became unofficially engaged in the summer of 1946 while at Balmoral but an official announcement was delayed until Princess Elizabeth turned 21.

Philip renounced his Greek royal title, applied for British citizenship and in 1947 became a naturalized British subject. The wedding was attended by plethora of foreign kings and queens and distracted the public imagination in the stark post-war days of November 1947. The newlyweds were called the Fairy Princess and Prince Charming.
He adopted a new surname, but it was not Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, the family name of the Danish royal house from which his father was descended.

He chose instead Mountbatten, an Anglicized version of Battenberg, his mother’s family name. he became His Royal Highness was before his marriage on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey and he was created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, and made a Knight of the Garter. He was accorded by the Queen the style and title of a Prince of the United Kingdom in February 1957.
