Japanese royal family news reveals that Princess Aiko of Japan becomes the imperial clan’s newest working member next month. You may not have heard of her though, as she is not well known outside of her country. As she comes to the forefront, she is described as a teen who endured school bullying and fought some major health issues.
She is 19-years old, and the sole child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.
Royal Family News – Who Is Princess Aiko?
Aiko will turn 20 on December 1, and at that time she will take her place in the public spotlight. Today she is in her second year of college, studying Japanese literature at Gakushuin University in Tokyo.
She will be expected to attend official engagements and will be present at royal galas. But due to the Covid pandemic she will take her place without, “a new tiara and set of jewels when she comes of age next month,” according to the Daily Mail.
When her cousins Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako, and Princess Kako of Akishino came of age they received a brand new jewelry collection, but Aiko will have to make due with a hand-me-down set.
How has Covid affected her jewelry situation? It is due to a lack of budget because of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis that the country must confront. Instead of spending money on some fancy bling, the family will gift Aiko with her aunt Sayako Kuroda’s tiara, according to Royal Central. It’s the thought that counts, right?
Royal Family News – Princess Aiko Will Be In The Spotlight
To date there is little known about the princess. But it has been revealed that she once dropped out of school due to bullying and anxiety. When she turned eight, it was revealed her hobbies included calligraphy, jumping rope, and writing poetry. She is also an accomplished pianist, cellist and violinist.
In 2010 the media reported that she was gone from school after experiencing anxiety over the, “wild behavior,” of boys at school.

Royal Family News – What Will Aiko Do Next?
That year she did attend the school’s graduation ceremony and was absent from a welcoming ceremony for her new third grade students. At the time she went to school for three hours a day, with her mother, and palace officials stated that she was taking private lessons as well.
One year later Aiko was hospitalized for pneumonia after experiencing a high temperature of around 102.2F, and a cough. But things then began to look up for her and when she returned to school, she joined the school orchestra and learned English.
