The pair started their relationship back in 2003 when both were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. According to the Channel 5 documentary Secrets of Royal palaces, the couple had tons of privacy at Balmoral Castle and there their romance bloomed. Royal watcher Penny Junor revealed just what the pair got up to while they were there out of the public eye.

Junor stated, “There is an enormous freedom,” at the Scottish castle and the show’s narrator Glynis Barber concurred saying, “It’s the one palace they can almost guarantee privacy which is probably why so many royal relationships have blossomed there. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent time there when Kate was first being introduced to the family.”
Royal watcher Richard Kay chimed in that, “The Balmoral test, a pretty terrifying moment for any royal girlfriend,” was passed successfully by plucky Kate.

Ingrid Seward is another royal expert and she agreed that, “When you stay in one of the royal residences, there’s a lot of pressure to try and get it right.”
In fact the couple would never have met if William hadn’t broken a 150-year-old tradition by rejecting the University of Oxford or Cambridge. Apparently the Queen put several rules on William while he was at the university including no smoking or drugs and not talking about his family with classmates. Also, and perhaps more significantly, William was forbidden from kissing a date in public!
Another show narrator, Christine-Marie Liwag Dixon shared that, “Before William headed off to continue his studies in 2001 his grandmother set down some strict instructions for him which included no smoking, only moderate drinking and definitely no drugs. Queen Elizabeth II also forbade him to kiss a date in public.”
