Royal Family News: Meghan Markle Wins Cases Without Having To Go To Trial

British royal family news reveals that Meghan Markle Duchess of Sussex has won her claim against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), publishers of the Mail On Sunday and MailOnline, for misuse of private information and infringement of copyright. The case centered on a letter to her father that they published in 2019 after her 2018 wedding.

The High Court ruled today that her privacy was breached over the publication and following today’s ruling, The Mail on Sunday and MailOnline said they are considering an appeal.

A spokesman for the papers said, “We are very surprised by today’s summary judgment and disappointed at being denied the chance to have all the evidence heard and tested in open court at a full trial. We are carefully considering the judgement’s contents and will decide in due course whether to lodge an appeal.”

Justice Warby ruled the issue over ownership of copyright of the letter she wrote to Thomas Markle can be decided at trial.

He declared that Meghan had a, “reasonable expectation of privacy,” and that it was ‘fanciful to think otherwise.”

Royal Family News – Will ANL Appeal?

The High Court’s decision to grant the summary judgment allows Meghan to not have to testify in court in her privacy case, thus avoiding facing off against her estranged father. Thomas Markle was expected to take to the stand on behalf of the publisher.

The High Court’s decision also means that Omid Scobie, one of the authors of Finding Freedom, a book on Meghan and Prince Harry’s life, will not have to give evidence either.

Referring to the letter, Justice Warby declared, “It was, in short, a personal and private letter. The majority of what was published was about the claimant’s own behaviour, her feelings of anguish about her father’s behaviour – as she saw it – and the resulting rift between them. These are inherently private and personal matters.”

“The claimant had a reasonable expectation that the contents of the Letter would remain private.”

Royal Family News – What Happens Next In The Case?

The case returns to court on March 2 to decide the assessment of damages, any outstanding issues that must be decided at trial, and costs.

Last month during a hearing on the summary judgment, Meghan’s lawyers argued before that it should be granted on the grounds that the publisher’s case had, “no real prospect of success.”
