An influential think tank just released data that shows that, “Death, scandal and resignation are blamed for a 40 percent drop in ribbon-cutting and hand-shaking duties over the past decade,” and royal expert Margaret Holder thinks the sentiment is spot on.
She warns that unless the royals institute a greater public presence they could “herald the demise of the institution.” As a case in point, Express notes that, “Queen Elizabeth II famously believed she had to be seen to be believed.”
Royal Family News: Will The Firm Fade Away?
The harsh caution that The Firm will disappear if “junior members” of the royal family don’t step up. The caution comes right before King Charles’ and Queen Camilla’s May 6 Coronation.
Numbers don’t lie and royal engagements in the UK have plunged from 3,338 in 2014 to 2,079 in 2022 according to the think tank Civitas who thinks that “the Royal Family could disappear from public view” unless the ship is righted.
In recent years the monarchy has lost Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to death, Harry and Meghan the Duke and Duchess of Sussex defected to the US, and Andrew the Duke of York was stripped of his royal role due to a sex abuse scandal.
Royal Family News: Will Charles Reverse Trend?
Civitas reports that “The Royal family as we know it is on the brink of collapse and risks abolishing itself by stealth if the King doesn’t take steps to boost visits that have fallen radically over the last decade. Through death, scandal and resignation the Royal family is increasingly reliant on a few hard-working members, with Charles, Anne and Edward, doing almost half the work.”
“We now need new working royals or will have to accept a Royal Family that is more distant from the people than at any time in the past 100 years.”

King Charles and Princess Anne are named as the “hardest working” royals and they are also the oldest senior working royals, in their 70s. The report indicates that other elderly royals, the Duke of Kent at 87, Princess Alexandra at 86, the Duke of Gloucester at 78 and the Duchess of Gloucester at 76 are also among the most busy.
