British royal family news shows that much has been made about Prince Charles supposedly refusing to hand down a royal title to his youngest brother. He is famous for wanting a skinny monarchy, but is he now cheating his brethren out of their birthrights?

When Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh passed away this year it was expected that Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, would be given his father’s title (in this case a Duke trumps an Earl?).

In recent days there has been a firestorm of controversy regarding Charles’ reported refusal to hand over the Duke of Edinburgh title to Edward, presumably to keep it for himself.

Perhaps to counter that unflattering narrative, one of the queen’s former aides is speaking out to say that Charles will indeed pass on the Duke of Edinburgh title to his youngest brother.

The Queen’s former press secretary tweeted out: “That Prince Edward will become The Duke of Edinburgh in the next reign was his father’s and is his mother’s wishes and Prince Charles won’t go against those. It won’t happen immediately but by 2029, when Edwards turns 65, it will.”

“Time for speculation, without substance, to cease.”

In 1999 Prince Edward married Sophie and at that time Buckingham Palace announced the couple would take the titles of Earl and Countess of Wessex.

But, and this is a big but, the Palace added that the Queen, Philip and Charles, “agreed that the Prince Edward should be given the Dukedom of Edinburgh in due course, when the present title now held by Prince Philip eventually reverts to the Crown.”

Royal Family News – Will Charles Follow His Father’s Wishes?

So which version of the news is accurate? Many insiders insist that the Earl becoming a Duke is not a slam dunk.

An insider told the Sunday Times, “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”

Piling on to the Edward-gate controversy, another source added, “Edinburgh won’t go to [the Wessexes] as far as the prince is concerned.”

Again, which version of the truth is real?

The Palace told People magazine: “All stories of this nature are speculation and no final decisions have been taken. It would be inappropriate and disrespectful to the Queen to comment on matters of accession and we will be maintaining our long-standing policy of not doing so.

In other words, never complain, never explain—because the Queen said so!
