Royal Family News: Prince Charles Could Quit His Stressful Day Job And Become A Landlord

Prince CharlesBritish royal family news shows that one cannot be the reigning and future UK monarch, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles respectively, and not have a palace or two to call home sweet home. In fact their holdings may surprise you. Here we break down some of their more lavish real estate and let’s just say their portfolio goes beyond a little mountain cabin or some Florida timeshare.

Royal Family News – The Monarchy Has Vast Wealth

According to the Wall Street Journal, the combined real estate of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles constitute a billion-dollar property portfolio that includes townhouses, country houses, farmhouses, cottages, city apartments and more than a sprinkling of palaces and castles.

Who has not heard of Buckingham Palace? It is the monarch’s official London residence and was purchased in 1761 back when those pesky Americans were still paying their taxes on time.

How much does such a residence cost? King George II got it for a steal– less than $28,000, cheaper than a base Honda.

In today’s dollars that’s just a smidge over $6 million. In today’s market the little house is estimated to be worth around $1.3 billion.

Royal Family News – The Royals Have An Impressive Property Profile

There is more than one castle of course. The royals also own Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, Balmoral Castle Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and Sandringham Estate. Fun fact: Princess Diana was born at Sandringham.

Royal Family News – What Properties Do The Windsor’s Own

Not every royal pile is a palace, however. For example Prince Charles owns a 18th-century farmhouse on 192 acres in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It cost $1.59 million in 2007 and it’s now appraised at about $3.6 million.

He also owns a snug three-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage in the village of Viscri in Romania. A couple of hours down the road he also owns a larger, five-bedroom, five-bath home (guest cottage included) in Zalánpatak.

But the biggest meatball in Prince Charles’ portfolio is his Duchy of Cornwall, located in Cornwall, England. It brings in revenue from its 130,125 acres of farmland, forest, coastline, and residential and commercial properties. In other words if Charles ever wanted to quit his day job, he could become a landlord and live quite well.
