Not everyone was pleased with Charles’ presence however. “If you are breaking with the monarchy, then you cannot invite them to be part of that process,” republican activist David Denny, told Barbados Today. “I am not saying that you cannot invite the prince to Barbados, but not for our ceremony for Barbados to become a republic. It is a contradiction. It is not an honorable thing to do and I think it is an insult to Barbadian people.”

Charles arrived in Barbados on November 28 to see firsthand the island nation become a republican country and ditch his mother as its head of state.
Charles, the Prince of Wales landed on the island on Sunday and was on hand as the former British colony, “completes its transition of independence from the United Kingdom,” according to the Daily Mail.
Charles’ arrival was greeted with competing anthems. While the British national anthem was played, he was greeted by a, “Guard of Honor featuring Barbados’s new post-republic military colors, which no longer bear the insignia of Queen Elizabeth II.”

Was it an awkward visit? It may have been bittersweet for Charles, who will inherit the throne after his mother. And then there is the controversy over the colonization issue. To this end, Charles’ official office Clarence House released details of his speech, the words of which were spoken at Monday’s handover ceremony. “The speech won’t mention Britain’s colonial ties with the country but will stress that the close relationship between the U.K. and Barbados will remain the same,” according to the Daily Mail.

Prince Charles affirmed, “the myriad connections between the people of our countries—through which flow admiration and affection, co-operation, and opportunity.”
Barbados will continue to be a member of the Commonwealth, the group of 54 nations that include former territories of the British Empire.
Governor-General Sandra Mason, was sworn in as the country’s first elected president. Mason said during a 2020 announcement of the country’s intention to become a republic, “The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving.”
