British royal family news reveals that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, ex wife of Prince Charles and mother to Princes William and Harry.

She died after suffering injuries in a tragic car crash in Paris. Now one of her former bodyguards is speaking out about the beloved icon, sharing a reminiscence about the legendary human rights crusader.

Lee Sansum was one of several bodyguards assigned to protect Diana. He was with her during one of her final vacations in France with her partner Dodi Fayed. Sansum was hired by Fayed’s father, Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Sansum explores his memories of the late princess in a new book titled Protecting Diana: A Bodyguard’s Story. In the book Sansum recalls a talk he had with Diana, one in which he claims she expressed the desire to move to the U.S.

He says that her sentiment was echoed in her son Prince Harry’s move to the United States in 2020. Today Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are raising two young children, Archie and Lili.

According to Sansum, Princess Diana was “on the brink” of moving to the US before she died. The vacation in St. Tropez that he speaks of occurred in 1997, a period of upheaval for Diana. She was newly divorced from Prince Charles and she was experiencing heavy levels of media scrutiny.

Sansum writes in his book that during that Princess Diana said to him, “There is nothing I can do in the UK. The papers there attack me no matter what I do. I want to go to the US and live there so I can get away from it all. At least in America they like me and will leave me alone.”

Sansum writes, “When I look back on it now, it’s amazing to think that Diana was very seriously considering leaving her country for good because of the damaging effect the press was having on her life. Now, more than twenty years later, one of her own sons has taken the same decision she was on the brink of.”

According to Harry his drastic Megxit move was not as bad as some royal experts made it out to be. He told talk show host James Cordon in 2021 that his decision to leave Britain, “Was never walking away. It was stepping back rather than stepping down.”

He later complained about the media to Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast: “When you realize that you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t … At that point—I guess I have to thank the U.K. press at this point—because it got so bad so quickly. Then you have to acknowledge that fear and go, ‘Actually, I’m no longer scared of you. I’m no longer scared of doing or saying what you want me to do or say.'”

This year he told People that, “he believes his mother, Diana, would be proud of him and the journey he has been on.” He boasted, “I honor my mother in everything I do.
