Royal Family News: Prince Philip’s Funeral Will Be Next Saturday

British royal family news reveals that starting today the United Kingdom enters eight days of mourning for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who died this morning at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. His funeral will be held next Saturday and it was with “deep sorrow” that the world’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth, announced his death.

The Duke spent his final days at Windsor Castle with his loving wife following a month long stay in the hospital. He was admitted in mid-February for an infection and subsequently had a procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.

Crowds immediately began to lay flowers and tributes at the various palaces and the throngs grew so large that the police asked them to disperse because of the pandemic.

As the crowds grew into the hundreds, the Government urged people to stay away and not to leave mementos for public health reasons. The notice announcing the Duke of Edinburgh’s death at the gates of Buckingham Palace had to be removed due to overcrowding and to maintain social distancing.

Philip was last seen in public as he left the hospital on March 16. He and the queen were married for 73rd years and he was due to turn 100 on June 10.

His funeral will entail a small family service at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. He will be buried in Frogmore Gardens, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert repose. While the date has not been officially announced, sources claim it will be on Saturday, April 17.

More details will come forward in the next few days, but the public have been urged to stay away from any official services to avoid spreading Covid-19 and the ceremony will be televised on TV.

Normally there would be a state funeral including a flotilla of boats on the Thames to mark his death but that seems unlikely due to covid restrictions. And, the Duke was said to have disliked that idea because he, “didn’t want the fuss.”

The Royal Family issued this statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
