The 9th Earl Spencer came into possession of a rare photo featuring his grandfather, Albert Spencer, with Queen Elizabeth II’s grandmother, Queen Mary.

Spencer obviously found humor in the tight and stiff facial expressions popular in photographs of that era—lest anyone actually seem to be enjoying themselves!

One thing is clear and that is that Queen Mary looks very much like her granddaughter. Fans who saw the picture also commented on this similarity.

Way back in the day, Sulgrave Manor was the ancestral home of George Washington. In 1914 it was purchased by the British American Peace Committee (which included the earl’s great-grandfather). Spencer’s grandfather was showing the area to Mary, who is 1910 was made queen consort.

The photo shows that Charles Spencer’s royal connections go back much farther than him being an uncle to the man in line to be king one day. His own ancestors had their own royalties and one eagle-eyed commenter wrote, “Who knew his great-grandson would be born to her great-grandson; both to be future kings of England.
