British royal family news shows that the queen was not the only high profile royal absent from the Commonwealth Day celebration Monday. Her DIL Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was also missing. Prince Edward’s wife is in New York for several days and had to miss the event as she will be doing multiple official royal visits including delivering a key note speech at the United Nations.

The Upholding Women’s Rights in Afghanistan event is one of the events the Countess will be speaking at. It is hosted by the Group of Friends of Women in Afghanistan, UN Women, and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security. A Buckingham Palace statement about the event reads in part: “The event will convene experts and leading policy to consider how to make international mechanisms more effective in upholding human rights for women and girls in Afghanistan.”
While she is in town, Sophie will also attend a briefing with UN Women by the UK Mission to New York in which they will learn about the impact the Ukraine conflict is having on women and girls, and how to manage the international humanitarian response to the situation.
