n one of the most popular series on Netflix, it’s also received a lot of criticism. Many fans have called the show out for not having a clear disclaimer clarifying that the series depicts the Royal Family’s difficulties but is only loosely based on fact. It is clear that the show’s creators have taken a lot of liberties with creative license.

Express UK reports that some close to the Royal Family slammed the series on Saturday for being “crude, cruel, and totally insensitive,” specifically in light of Queen Elizabeth II’s recent death and funeral.

Royal Experts Calling Out The Crown

Cosmo explains that, while an episode may depict a factual event, such as when the queen didn’t promptly visit the Welsh mining town of Aberfan after the disaster there that day the deaths of 144 miners, the conversations it depicts occurred behind closed doors. So, no one actually knows what happened and the Queen’s reasons for not immediately jetting to Wales have never been properly substantiated.

Many have also reportedly taken exception to the show’s implication that Prince Phillip was not entirely faithful while he was married to the Queen. Royal experts are now calling out the series for planning to include Princess Diana’s 1999 funeral which was reportedly viewed by 2.5 billion people from around the globe.

Bad Timing to Show Princess Diana’s Funeral Scene

According to US Today News, an especially heartbreaking moment around the day that has since gone into the history books was when the two young princes, William (15 at the time) and Harry (12) walked a mile behind their mother’s coffin.

The moment is one that the two princes have described as traumatic, especially considering their young ages at the time. In 2017, Prince William referred to the moment, calling it “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”

Mail On Sunday reports that the Queen mother’s official biographer has described the series as “vile,” specifically for planning to air the funeral scenes so close to the Queen’s death. “Nothing is sacred to [the writer of The Crown] Peter Morgan. This is a vile series which lies to the public and has been incredibly hurtful to the Royal Family from the Queen and our new King down. Unlike any other family, they cannot sue.”

Beyond Any Sense Of Decency

Royal author Angela Levin also chimed in with her take on the series’ decision to include the funeral, telling the outlet, “It’s inhuman, beyond any sense of decency, and hurtful. When I first went to interview Harry, he asked if I had seen The Crown, which at the time was on Series 2. I said no and he said, ‘Oh you must watch it. My only problem is they’ve got to stop before they get to me.’”
