British royal family news reveals that one day Prince Charles will become King, and his son Prince William will follow him in time. When William ascends the throne his wife Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will become queen consort.

At this point in time Prince Charles is titled the Prince of Wales. But in the monarchy titling is fluid, and they pass down titles all the time, as one’s status changes. Or, as the case of Prince Andrew/Prince Harry, their titles were stripped off clean for conduct unbecoming of The Firm.

Nonetheless, those whose reputations remain unbesmirched, such as William and Charles, will see their titles change over the years. At the moment, Kate Middleton has several titles including the Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn and Lady Carrickfergus, among them. When Charles ascends to the throne she will then be known as the Princess of Wales.

When Will Kate Middleton Be Queen Consort?

That title may sound familiar as it was the last one associated with the late Princess Diana, William’s mother. She was the first wife of Prince Charles, and as such she was given the title Princess of Wales. That title was so associated with her that Charles’ second wife Camilla Parker Bowles chose not to take it on herself when she married Charles.

There was an element of scandal accounting for the deference—Charles and Camilla were allegedly having an affair while he and Diana were married. But according to protocol it’s possible that Kate will take on the title when Charles becomes King. If that is the case one royal expert thinks it could be a sentimental moment for William. A source told The Telegraph, “I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment. This is her [Diana’s] son and his wife, so in some ways it will be coming full circle – but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost.”

The title won’t be forever, however. When William becomes king, Kate will delete the Princess of Wales title and be referred to as Queen Catherine. Technically she will be Queen consort, which means she is a commoner. In the monarchy what goes around comes around so to speak, and when William and Kate become king and queen, their eldest son Prince George inherit will the title of Prince of Wales and his wife, if he is married, will be the next Princess of Wales.
