British royal family news reveals that the Royal Family enjoys Christmas together at Sandringham each year. The monarchy is full of protocol and traditions, including Christmas gag gifts. Who knew?
When it comes to dinner on Christmas Day, their menu may also surprise you. When one thinks of the royal family, the terms opulence and lavish come to mind. But according to one source, the words resourceful and thrifty are more apt. Here’s what to know about how the royal family celebrates gastronomically!
Royal Family News – The Royals Are Resourceful
Former royal butler Grant Harrold told The Sun that the family’s Christmas dinner is more like Hometown Buffet than a Michelin starred restaurant.
He noted that they have “all the selections put in front” of them buffet style for dinner. For lunch they have “a served meal” because the staff are working, but the employees have the evening off.
Alas, dinner “is just bits [from lunch] coming back out again, which shows you nothing goes to waste.” See, the royals are just like you and me …

Harrold got into delicious specifics with Marie Claire, saying that the clan are served “a traditional Christmas lunch, with goose, turkey and obviously all of the trimmings.”
Another former palace chef, Darren McGrady, told The Sun that “salad with shrimp or lobster, and … parsnips, carrots, brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding with brandy butter for dessert” are also on the menu.
Royal Family News – The Queen’s Grand Christmas Tradition
Harrold reminisced that the late Queen Elizabeth and her husband the late Prince Philip were the first to arrive at Sandringham, with the other royals arriving on December 23 “because most of them are working royals.”
And the royals follow German tradition by opening their presents on Christmas Eve. According to the Daily Beast, this is a tradition that Princess Catherine would like to change to align with the modern protocol of opening gifts on Christmas Day.
Although there were plenty of presents, Harrold maintains that the holiday “was all about the religious aspect” for Queen Elizabeth. According to him, she “would go off to church at around 8 a.m., which was the first service. There was no press at that point as it was always a quiet moment for her.”

This year the royal chef will cook for almost 50 people. Notably absent is Prince Andrew who last week was implicated in his latest scandal.
This time around he was accused of cavorting with a banned Chinese spy, with both men possibly profiting from the relationship. His live-in ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and their daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will not be seen either.
Also absent will be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, for what seem like obvious reasons.
