Sophie Wessex might be the British Royal Family’s new media darling, but she wasn’t always this picture ready or even perfect, for that matter. In fact, there’s a new report that exposes all of the royally embarrassing moments that Prince Edward’s wife has cringed over from the past. Here’s what you need to know.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex is fast becoming known as one of the hardest working members of the British monarchy. During the last several months and during the coronavirus lockdown, Sophie has won fans over with her laid-back approach and hands-on style to her charity work and her royal engagements. But it wasn’t too long ago that she was caught making some ill-advised comments about some major British political figures back in 2001.

According to Britain’s Express.co.uk, Sophie Wessex was pranked when she was unknowingly recorded making comments with a News of the World reporter pretending to be an Arab sheik. It was so embarrassing that Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family couldn’t help but hang their heads in shame at the time.

British Royal News: Sophie Wessex Wasn’t Always Perfect

Channel 5 documentary Scandals at the Palace narrator Paula Bacon puts it this way, “What the fake sheik caught on tape caused considerable embarrassment. Sophie can be heard criticizing Cherie Blair for not understanding the countryside. At the time, Tony Blair was Prime Minister.”

If that weren’t enough, Sophie was also caught making some rather not-so-nice comments about Prince Charles’ partner at the time, Camilla Parker Bowles. Charles and Camilla didn’t get married until 2005.

Paula Bacon continued, “She also spoke about Charles and Camilla, who then were not married and how many people might not want Camilla to be Queen. Caught by the fake sheik, Sophie and the Royal Family desperately tried to contain the scandal, which made it much worse.”

The scandal later resulted in Queen Elizabeth laying down stricter rules on managing working members of the royal family, especially with what they can and can’t say to the media.
