In a piece that he wrote for the New Yorker this week, ghostwriter JR Moehringer recalled a tense Zoom call that he had with Prince Harry in the middle of the night. He admits that writing Spare certainly wasn’t one of his easiest projects and that things got so stressful that at one point he thought he was going to get fired.

JR put it this way, “I was exasperated with Prince Harry. My head was pounding, my jaw was clenched and I was starting to raise my voice.”

He continued, “Some part of me was still able to step outside the situation and think, ‘This is so weird. I’m shouting at Prince Harry. Then, as Harry started going back at me, as his cheeks flushed and his eyes narrowed, a more pressing thought occurred: ‘Whoa, it could all end right here.’”

Prince Harry Wanted To Make His Point Clear

JR admitted that he and Prince Harry were at odds over one particular passage that detailed the royal’s years with the British Army. Prince Harr recalled a time when he had to participate in a grueling military exercise in which he was captured by pretend terrorist.

The author explained, “He’s hooded, dragged to an underground bunker, beaten, frozen, starved, stripped, forced into excruciating stress positions by captors wearing black balaclavas. Harry always wanted to end this scene with a thing he said to his captors, a comeback that struck me as unnecessary, and somewhat inane.”

It wasn’t until later in the Zoom call that Harry explained what he really wanted to explain in the passage.

JR continued, “He exhaled and calmly explained that, all his life, people had belittled his intellectual capabilities, and this flash of cleverness proved that, even after being kicked and punched and deprived of sleep and food, he had his wits about him.”

When JR told the royal that his answer wasn’t needed for the book, Harry quipped back at him with, “‘I really enjoy getting you worked up like that.’”
