Several members of the Royal Family will be taking part over the course of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The multi-sport event will officially kick off on July 28 with the Queen’s message, which has traveled through the 72 countries and territories that make up the Commonwealth of Nations. Over 5,000 people will be taking part in the events.
Prince Charles To Read The Queen’s Message On Her Majesty’s Behalf
The Queen is currently vacationing at Balmoral Castle and won’t be able to make the long journey to Birmingham. Also, she’s 96. However, her first son and heir Prince Charles will be representing her at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on Thursday, July 28. Moreover, he will be reading the Queen’s speech, which is still sealed in a smart baton.
The Queen’s message was sealed in the baton using a cutting-edge technology and handed off to Paralympic gold medalist Kadeena Cox to be carried on the first leg of its journey.
Since then, it has traveled across nations in its 294-day journey. At the moment, the Queen’s Baton final runner is yet to be announced.
There will be 280 events across 20 different sports, before finally rounding up on 8th August.
What Queen Elizabeth Has Said About The Commonwealth
Did you know that the Queen is the patron of the Commonwealth Games? Through the years, she has kept close association with the sporting event and has encouraged interaction between the Commonwealth countries by trying to erase the feeling of differences existing between people of different races.
Remarkably, she said during a radio broadcast made from South Africa: “As I speak to you today from Cape Town I am six thousand miles from the country where I was born, I am certainly not six thousand miles from home.
“That is the great privilege belonging to our place in the worldwide Commonwealth, that there are homes ready to welcome us in every continent of the earth. Before I am much older I hope I shall come to know many of them.”
Over the years, she would attend the Commonwealth Games several times. But apart from the Commonwealth Games, she has become a popular figure at many sporting events, both in Great Britain and across the Commonwealth.
For this year’s event, this is what’s going to happen according to the official protocol instructions: “The athlete carrying the message will enter the arena and run around the track to the saluting dais and hand the baton to the Duke who will open it and read it to the assembled company.”
