In the UK, Graham Smith is head of the Republic movement, a group who wishes to abolish the monarchy. British republicans would like to see no more kings and queens ruling the land after are Elizabeth II but experts think this is a pipe dream. What is the actual state of the monarchy in the 21st century? Will future kings Charles, William and George usher in new times or go the way of the dinosaurs?

Most royal experts seem to agree that the monarchy will survive, so long as it keeps pace with the times. Smith said, “We’re not expecting the monarchy to be abolished whilst the queen is on the throne,” but he does want the UK to have an elected, non-partisan president as head of state.
He told AFP, “This is the last monarch who is going to have anything like the sort of popular support the queen has.”
Most experts agree that the queen’s popularity will not be surpassed, at least not by her immediate heir, her eldest son Prince Charles. Once he is installed, Smith thinks, “then yes, we can certainly achieve that goal and get rid of the monarchy.”

The queen is now 96 and, “the jubilee also heralds the inevitable end of the second Elizabethan age,” according to Yahoo. “The unprecedented Platinum Jubilee is being seen as a chance to reflect on the queen’s central place in British life since 1952. That, said the Republic movement on its website, is a chance to “Make Elizabeth the last.”
Polls indicate that younger people are less impressed with the monarchy, with Charles not as well-regarded his mother. The British Future think-tank claims that 58 percent of Britons support the monarchy, while 25 percent would prefer a republic after Elizabeth.
Royal Family News – Is The Monarchy a Dinosaur?
Smith sees the monarchy as an, “undemocratic, anti-democratic and elitist” institution that costs taxpayers millions.
Robert Hazell of University College London said, “When the Queen dies it will be a very big turning point.” That is a point most royal watchers can agree on. For now, let’s celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and all that Elizabeth II has accomplished in her incredible lifetime of service, and let tomorrow take care of itself.
