Will Queen Elizabeth Hand Over Power To Prince Charles?

Queen Elizabeth - Prince CharlesShe’s been in power for so many decades that many people have simply stopped following her count. But is it time for Her Majesty to step down and give her son, Prince Charles, the throne so she can finally enjoy a well-deserved retirement in peace?

That’s what a lot of royal fans are asking this week as there’s a new report that suggests Queen Elizabeth might hand over power to Prince Charles in the next two years. Here’s what you need to know.

According to the Daily Mail, some royal experts predict that the monarch will relinquish some of the major duties that she currently has to her son Prince Charles by the time that she turns 95.

Prince Charles May Have To Wait A Little Longer Before He Becomes King

However, she will retain her title, which means that Charles might have to wait just a little bit longer before he becomes the official King of England.

With that said though, some sources say that the Queen is thinking of bringing in the 1937 Regency Act which means that the monarch can hand over her duties in special instances. That means Charles would be taking on the sovereign’s duties and that Prince Philip would become a Guardian.

One senior member of the Royal Household told the publication, “Out of the profound respect the Queen holds for the institution of monarchy and its stewardship, Her Majesty would want to make sure that she has done everything she can for her country and her people before she hands over.

Regency Act Allows The Heir To Govern If The Sovereign Is Incapacitated

“She is dutiful to her core. Her Majesty is mindful of her age and wants to make sure when the time comes, the transition of the Crown is seamless.”

The 1937 Regency Act grants power to the heir apparent “in the event of the incapacity of the Sovereign through illness, and for the performance of certain of the Royal functions in the name and on behalf of the Sovereign in certain other events.”

So far Buckingham Palace has not made any comments about what Queen Elizabeth plans on doing in the future or what Prince Charles will do when he takes over the throne. Either way, we will update you with more information as it comes in.
