Arrowverse Producers Had No Intentions to Create a Multiverse

Arrowverse revealed they didn’t have any plans of creating a multiverse. This may come as a shock to the fans of Arrow. The producers of the series revealed that they did not intend to create a multiverse of superheroes. Arrowverse is part of The CW’s lineup of DC television shows, such as Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. While Black Lightning is not part of the Arrowverse, it has become a part of it thanks to the development of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Fans could spend several hours discussing the Arrowverse and how it came into fruition. Long story short, it started back in 2012 when The CW premiered Arrow, an adaptation of the character that’s in the DC Comics. Smallville ended its run prior to that, so Arrow became the latest superhero show on The CW. The multiverse then continued with The Flash. It ended up doing even better than The Arrow, wanting the producers to add more.

The Arrowverse exploded with additions like Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. Even though Arrowverse is coming to an end this season, the Arrowverse will continue to add more editions. Crisis on Infinite Earths is already drawing attention. Fans are looking forward to the premiere of Superman & Lois. The Arrowverse has come a long way. So, it might surprise fans that an Arrowverse wasn’t meant to happen.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, each of the producers from the Arrowverse discussed the success of the shows, the crossover events, and how everything fell into place. Greg Berlanti revealed that the Arrowverse wasn’t meant to happen. He said that “each step was a surprise.” Marc Guggenheim added that when Arrow made its debut in 2012, and then they were asked if other superheroes would be introduced. Their original response was a responding “No.”

But then came the launch of The Flash. Guggenheim sees the Arrowverse as “Unbelievable,” even to this day. He made the decision to create an Arrowverse when he saw that once “if you succeed, do a second really good show.” It the Season 2 of The Flash which lead to the idea of a multiverse, which means there are more than one alternate universes. Sarah Schechter said that the multiverse crossover between The Flash and Supergirl was not “calculated,” but was a “pure, creative desire” to see Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist on the screen together.

Now alternate universes in superhero movies and television shows are nothing new. But it’s incredible how this multiverse happened. Arrow was originally intended as a crime thriller until Barry Allen arrived to the series and learned about the multiverse. Thanks to Arrow, Crisis on Infinite Earths is currently being adapted for television. Arrow has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 2012, and it doesn’t look like The CW wants to do away with it anytime soon.
