Bravo’s Blind Date Reboot is Being Called ‘Embarrassing’

Bravo’s Blind Date reboot has already premiered, and it’s failed to win people over. It’s expected to have its share of awkward encounters, make-out sessions, and uncomfortable questions. It’s completely different from the Bachelor franchise, Love Island, and Paradise Hotel. You’ll find yourself watching singles try to avoid the awkward silence by asking the most absurd questions about each other. This revamped version of the 1999 Blind Date series is filled with Instagram influencers and models who are trying to make it in Hollywood.

The series is narrated by comedian Nikki Glaser. According to The Daily Beast, Blind Date is sure to give you “secondhand embarrassment.” The formula stayed true to the original. Each episode features a pair of two singles who go out on a date. They either hit it off or don’t get along. However, these contestants ask their share of odd questions such as, “Do you like threesomes?” or “Do you have sex on the first date?”

It’s a far cry from the 1999 version which seemed raunchy at the time. Most of these singles are trying to fill in the half-hour void by dry humping in a hot tub or motorboating a woman’s cleavage. This show seems hard to watch in the #MeToo era. According to Bravo’s press release, Blind Date is a throwback to the days before online dating and social media apps ruined the sanctity of dating. Glaser makes this known in the intro during each episode by saying, “Welcome to Blind Date, where two couples meet in real life without being able to stalk each other on social media first.”

However, it seems like these singles were clearly plucked from Instagram. They seem to have a difficult time with maintaining normal conversation since they’re probably on their phones most of the time. Even the blue text message bubbles that replaced the original thought clouds in the original series fails to provide comedic relief. It doesn’t even make sense since people don’t think in text message format.

Blind Date seems to be a series that involves millennials in raunchy situations. The most embarrassing part of the series is not the sexualized dates.
