Candace Cameron Bure Shares ‘Faith Programming’ Focus

After leaving Hallmark for Great American Family, Candace Cameron Bure has shared her views on her new network home. Headed up by Bill Abbott, the new company appointed Bure its chief creative officer. And she shared that she made the decision because of her faith, noted Variety.

“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” explained Candace. “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord.” As a result, Bure shared that she supported the channel because of its focus on “faith programming and good family entertainment.”

But beyond her role as chief creative officer, the actress gets to choose in which films she wants a starring role. And she also serves as producer for religion entertainment under her own banner, Candace Cameron Bure Presents. However, in her interviews, the actress has sparked controversy over her comments about Hallmark.

Candace Cameron Bure Sparks Controversy Over LGBTQ Comments

One particularly controversial comment focused on a shady assessment of Hallmark. And Bure described the network as “basically is a completely different network than when I started because of the change of leadership.” However, she received a response. And the network asserted, “We want all viewers to see themselves in our programming and everyone is welcome.”

As a result, Hallmark has sought to offer more LGBTQ plots. For instance, its first original holiday movie featuring a same-sex couple will premiere next month. But Candace claimed that gay marriage and related topics will not air on the Great American Family,

And instead, Bure promised that the network “will keep traditional marriage at the core.” However, Abbott seemed to try to minimize the controversy over LGBTQ story lines on his network. And he noted that he remains “aware of the trends.” But although he didn’t rule out gay marriage stories in the future, he also admitted that such movies won’t debut anytime soon.

Great American Family Won’t Air Gay Marriage Story Lines In Near Future

As a result of the differences between Hallmark and Great American Family, Abbott defended not producing more inclusive stories. And he added, “There’s no whiteboard that says, ‘Yes, this’ or ‘No, we’ll never go here.’ Sometimes we’re not thought of by people who are really good at those story lines,” added the network head.

As a result, if and when Great American Family decides to experiment with LGBTQ stories, Abbott said he would need to “go seek them.” And he admitted that he faces challenges he didn’t expect. “In growing this business, it’s much a much heavier lift than I ever thought. I knew it was going to be hard, but not this hard,” said the candid network executive.

However, Candace emphasized her goal of Christmas and tradition as she defines it. “I think we know the core audience and what they love is exactly how Bill originally built the Hallmark Channel,” declared Bure. “That was Christmas and those traditional holidays, so that’s what the focus is going to be.” And she also offered a defense of avoiding gay marriage and related topics. “You can’t do everything at once,” noted the actress.
