Season 12 spoilers for Chicago Fire reveal Taylor Kinney returning. However, the actor’s comeback takes place after his sudden departure in the middle of season 11. And Taylor only gave personal issues as the reason, according to Pop Culture.

Beloved for his multi-layered portrayal of Lieutenant Kelly Severide, Kinney disappointed fans when he left Firehouse 51. However, several new reports have shared that Taylor will return.

When the actor exited Chicago Fire so abruptly mid-season, the show took a previously unscheduled hiatus. And that allowed producers to change the scripts. However, they did so by describing Lieutenant Kelly Severide as receiving the chance to attend an arson investigation training program.

Chicago Fire Spoilers – Will Jesse Spencer Return?

When the writers (WGA) strike ended, Chicago Fire numbered among Dick Wolf’s series to return to production. As a result, the initial episodes for season 12 will include Lieutenant Severide. However, reports leave it open-ended as to if Kinney will return permanently or temporarily. 

And though Taylor did not return for the season 11 finale, his rumored appearance in the season 12 premiere could signal a sea change for Chicago Fire. Kinney quickly became a Chicago Fire standout by playing Kelly Severide starting with the pilot episode of the NBC drama. And he also has taken on featured roles in both Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.

However, the continuation of the actors (SAG-AFTRA) strike means a delay before season 12 debuts.  Meanwhile, fans hope that Jesse Spencer will also return. Because season 11 of Chicago Fire concluded with Casey asking Brett to marry him, Spencer could make a comeback for a few episodes.

Chicago Fire Spoilers – Lieutenant Severide Gets New Expertise

As for specifics on Kinney’s appearance in season 12 of Chicago Fire, TV Insider noted that it would take just a few episodes to wrap up his character Severide’s story. And that likely would include Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). However, Chicago Fire covered up Kinney’s exit by describing Severide enrolling in a top-rated arson investigation program. And that means the NBC drama could show him providing his new expertise to the department.

But Chicago Fire also showed Cruz (Joe Minoso) serving as acting lieutenant of the squad in Severide’s absence. And news broke that Severide had begun work on an ATF investigation. But the finale featured Kidd confiding in Brett (Kara Killmer) and Violet (Hanako Greensmith) that Severide’s new gig occurred abruptly. 

And Kidd called it “no big deal and not to worry.” But because Severide seemed “just so vague about everything,” it all remained unclear as to “not just what exactly he’s up to but also how it affects when he comes home. He said that’s a little up in the air right now. I don’t know what’s going on with him,” she confessed.
