Doctor Who: Katy Manning Talks About Spin-Off Rumors, Teases Returning Characters

Doctor Who spoilers and updates tease that Katy Manning has opened up about rumored spinoffs and the possibility of familiar characters returning to the show. 

Fans may recall that Manning joined the show as Jo Grant in 1971. She appeared in the classic series until 1973. Since then, she made two appearances as her character in 2010 on The Sarah Jane Adventures and in a cameo for Jodie Whittaker’s final episode in 2022.

Her most recent appearance was in a short film that was made to promote Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 9 Blu-ray set. In the promotional video, her character went up against a Sea Devil. Fans loved the short film and called for a spinoff featuring the character.

In an interview during the special BFI screening of 1972’s The Sea Devils, the actress opened up about the possibility of spinoffs.

“There will be spin-offs, there will be people returning – I do know that,” she teased.

“I think Granny Jo […] is a glorious character now – this woman with all these children, championing the world… and the thought of this extraordinary old lady of 77…,” she hinted.

“I think it’d be lovely if she just occasionally comes in for a very good reason. They’ll bring lots of people back but I hope that Great Granny Jo gets just a little kind of nod here and there,” she continued.

There’s no confirmation that a spin-off featuring Jo is coming but fans can still delight in the fact that the actress is open to making another guest appearance.

Doctor Who Spoilers – Under New Boss Russell T Davies

Russell T Davies is now the new showrunner of the classic series. Speaking at the BFI, Davies teased that he’s eyeing more spinoffs. The Whoniverse already has Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. But Davies teased that his deal with Disney may allow him to expand even more.

In an interview with GQ, he said that “it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who. But he did clarify that he’s not criticizing the people who were running the show before him because they were doing so within BBC’s measures.

Doctor Who has three specials lined up for this year featuring David Tennant’s returning Doctor, before regenerating into Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. Fans can watch it on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ in other countries. Meanwhile, Doctor Who series 1-12 are available on HBO Max and the show also airs on BBC America. UK fans can also catch the classic Doctor Who on BritBox.
