The focus of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ has always been the journey a mother takes to reunite with her daughter.
Although there are concurrent running storylines, the dystopian show mainly focuses on Elisabeth Moss’ character June Osborne, as she searches for her first daughter who got ripped from her arms at the height of the formation of Gilead.
You may have heard our world compared to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ more times than is necessary, or even sane, but well, this dystopian world strips birthing women of their human rights.
Since the beginning of the show, Osborne’s mission has been to get her oldest daughter back, and before this fifth season concludes, she’d either have her back or there’ll only be ashes left the way I see things.
Elisabeth Moss Says Ending ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ As A Mom Means A Lot To Her
The finale season of Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ – inspired by Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name – is almost upon us. Based on the trailer, we see the women – or handmaids, if you will – launch an all-out rebellion against the very system that has controlled them for years.
The teaser already promises us a lot of excitement ahead of its premiere on April 8. For Moss, becoming a mother just as the show was wrapping up helped her connect more to her character’s motivations and truly understand the reason she’s determined to fight an institution bigger and stronger than she to get her daughter back.
“It was incredibly meaningful to be able to end this show as a mom, I got to tell you,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Because I’m playing this character who is this iconic mother figure. All mothers are heroines, and she’s definitely a heroine.”
When filming the season last year in Vancouver, Moss got the chance to bring her baby on set with her, something she said she was “so fortunate to be able to do,” adding, “So many parents cannot. Any of us who had the privilege of being able to bring our kids or see our kids at work, we would every single time be like, ‘Aren’t we lucky to get to do that?’”
Moss is yet to publicly share the sex or name of her baby, but that doesn’t mean that the child’s existence is not contributing to her career in immense ways.
“It’s such an important part of the story,” she says. “It was just this beautiful synergy, I think maybe is the word. This coming together of art and life that was undoubtedly, incredibly meaningful. I’m really glad that I got to have this last season playing June with a little bit more of a visceral emotional experience of some of the things that June is talking about or fighting for. I’m really happy that I got to have that experience.”
