One of the greatest frustrations for Jeopardy! fans are when contestants fail to answer questions viewers consider straightforward. Such a moment occurred during a recent episode, leaving fans at home stunned and disappointed.
The question, which involved a famous former U.S. president, became a triple stumper—none of the contestants could answer it correctly, despite its apparent simplicity to many viewers.
The Question That Stumped Jeopardy! Contestants
On the Friday, December 13 episode of Jeopardy!, three contestants competed in the trivia challenge: Ashley Chan, a publicist from Lewisville, Texas, who was a one-day champion with $15,600 in winnings; Carla Winston, a political scientist from Baltimore, Maryland; and Ram Murali, a writer originally from London, England.
In the first round, a surprising number of clues went unanswered, but one stood out as particularly shocking to viewers. Under the category “People in History,” longtime host Ken Jennings presented the $400 clue:
“An 1806 duel involving this future president resulted in the death of Charles Dickinson.”
The contestants remained silent, leaving fans at home shaking their heads. The correct response? “Who was Andrew Jackson?”
The Infamous Duel Between Andrew Jackson And Charles Dickinson
The question referenced a notorious historical event: an 1806 duel between Andrew Jackson and Charles Dickinson.
The conflict arose after Dickinson publicly accused Jackson of cheating in a horse race bet and insulted Jackson’s wife, Rachel, by calling her a “bigamist.” Fueled by rage, Jackson challenged Dickinson to a duel.
The encounter turned deadly. Dickinson fired first, hitting Jackson in the chest. Miraculously, Jackson survived the gunshot, although he suffered lifelong medical complications from the injury. Jackson then retaliated, fatally shooting Dickinson.
Despite killing his opponent in cold blood, Jackson faced no legal repercussions. This incident did little to hinder his political career, and 23 years later, in 1829, he became the seventh President of the United States.
Fans React To The Missed Question
The players’ failure to identify Andrew Jackson left Jeopardy! fans baffled. Many took to social media platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) to express their disbelief.
One fan wrote on Reddit: “Surprised nobody got the Andrew Jackson clue.”
Another added: “Yes, me too, and I’m pretty sure Andrew Jackson’s violent history has been a Jeopardy! question in other episodes.”
A third commented on X: “Jeopardy contests should go with Andrew Jackson if there’s a clue about a President killing someone face-to-face.”
Why This Question Stood Out
Andrew Jackson’s violent history has been well-documented and has even featured in the past Jeopardy! episodes. This particular clue, however, highlighted one of the most dramatic and controversial moments in his life.
Fans were likely frustrated because the duel is a relatively famous story in American history, often taught in schools and discussed in pop culture.
While the contestants may have been overwhelmed by the pressure of the game, the missed clue has reignited discussions about Jackson’s turbulent legacy, reminding audiences of the complex figures that shaped U.S. history.
