Lord of the Rings Season 2 Gets Renewed Before Season 1 Arrives on Amazon

The new Lord of the Rings series is doing well, and it hasn’t even streamed on Amazon yet. The show has already been renewed for Season 2 long before its Season 1 premiere. This is good news for fans of The Lord of the Rings who are anxiously waiting for more of their favorite fantasy story. The only problem is that production for Season 1 hasn’t even started yet and no one has an idea as to when it’ll make its debut.

There is some more bad news for The Lord of the Rings fans. The show is expected to go on a four or five month hiatus following the filming of its first two episodes, according to Deadline. The report revealed that Amazon Studios have to round all of their writers in order to work on Season 2. But that doesn’t make sense since Season 1 hasn’t even been worked on as of yet. The Season 2 script is expected to start sometime during the hiatus.

This latest news come on the anniversary that Amazon has acquired the television rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy saga. The deal included a spinoff series as well as a multi-season commitment. But the only catch is that Amazon will have order each individual season, which is why it’s taking so long. Since production hasn’t started for Season 1, Amazon wants to get ahead by ordering Season 2 and start the pre-production process.

This plan should decrease the long break between the premiere dates. In addition, the extended hiatus will allow the creative team to focus on the first two episodes, which is being considered as an extended pilot episode. They’ll also have to focus on shooting Season 2 alongside Season 1. According to the Deadline report, production will take place sometime when “the winter season in New Zealand is over.”

That means the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings could finally go into production after the New Zealand summer season starts. Then production will wrap up for the four-to-five-month hiatus. Season 2 should start sometime in September 2020 if Deadline’s report is accurate. What are your thoughts on The Lord of the Rings series?
