Syfy has released The Magicians Season 5 trailer. In case you didn’t know, the series is based on Lev Grossman’s novels of the same name. Even if it was inspired by the books, it’s diverted away from the original material. The divergence became apparent during the Season 4 finale of The Magicians when it killed off the main character, angering fans.

Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) was the central focus of The Magicians since its premiere in 2015. Viewers saw him admitted to the psychiatric ward for depression. He couldn’t differentiate between fairy tales and real-life events. Quentin continued to spiral even when he found out that some of his favorite fairy tales are in fact real. During the show’s Season 4 finale, Quentin is up against a group of powerful monsters in an effort to save his friends.

The episode titled “No Better to Be Safe Than Sorry,” ended with a moody rendition of A-ha’s classic 80s song “Take on Me” before the protagonist walks through a door and leaves fans in a state of shock. Quentin was the protagonist in all of Grossman’s novels. But he never gets killed off early on. It’s not uncommon that some characters have died and come back to life on The Magicians. However, it has been confirmed that Ralph’s character will not return for Season 5.

Getting rid of the character had fans wondering about the show’s future. Even rumors swirled about the show’s future demise. Syfy finally dropped the Season 5 trailer after several months of speculation. The trailer also reveals a premiere date of Jan. 15, 2020, according to ScreenRant. Season 5 will be focused on the characters saving the world from “too much goddamn magic.” It will also introduce new characters to fans.

The Magicians has also become a show that’s known to take risks. One of the biggest risks was killing off Ralph’s character. The Magicians has also tapped into societal issues, include LGBTQ love interests, marginalized minorities, and an irreverence for what other people consider to be “normal.” It’s the reason why this show has done so well on the network. Even though Quentin will be very much missed, his absence will from the show will allow the writers to focus on the diverse group of characters.
