The View Debates Polyamory Romance: Whoopi Goldberg Educates Co-Hosts!

The View has become known for tackling any and all supposedly forbidden topics. And that includes sex, politics, and religion. But The View host Whoopi Goldberg got the last word this week when the ladies reflected on polyamory and ethical non-monogamy.

And amid a discussion of open relationships, The View hosts contemplated whether they would consider polyamory. That practice involves multiple romantic relationships at the same time with the consent of everyone involved. Get all the details below.

The topic of ethical non-monogamy sparked a lively discussion among the hosts of The View this week. And in the wake of New York magazine’s cover story about polyamory, The View host Whoopi Goldberg asked her co-hosts Joy Behar, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin to weigh in. Would any of the ladies consider an open relationship, she asked, per People.

But Behar, 81, evaluated the question from an international perspective. And Joy responded by pointing to the French. “First of all, the French could not pull it off, they can’t even…” she began.

And then Behar claimed that in general, the United States seems “too puritanical. I mean, Janet Jackson’s boob popped out and the country went bananas. So how are they supposed to go to bed…” And she seemed too overcome to complete the thought.

And Haines, 46, picked up where Joy left off. She confessed that she could “barely handle one” relationship, let alone multiple. And Hostin, 55, took a different approach to the question of open relationships.

Hostin opined that people in polyamorous relationships seem “more evolved than I am.” And she confessed, “I’m more cave woman in my relationship.” Wife of orthopedist Emmanuel Hostin, she added, “It’s like, ‘You are mine.’ Like that’s more me.”

However, Hostin then contemplated the practical side of open relationships. “But what I don’t understand is like, some of these people are married, have children and have jobs. How do you have the time to do that with let alone one man, several men or women?” And she admitted, “They are not only more evolved than I am, they have more energy.”

But Griffin revealed that she rarely even finds time for a date night with her husband Justin Griffin. And the 34-year-old suggested that if someone wants to sleep with a lot of different people, “Why not just be single? Maybe that’s a lack of my understanding,” she added. “But if you’re saying, ‘I care about this person, but I also want to sleep with a lot of other people,’ why wouldn’t you just date around?”

But she also hinted that jealousy seems like a potential problem. And Griffin asserted, “There is no way one of the two parties in a polyamorous relationship isn’t actually jealous of the other one sleeping with someone else. They’re pretending. They know they have to do it to keep their relationship alive. I just don’t think humans are wired that way.”

However, Goldberg argued the point. And she urged, “You guys have to widen your arena of people that you know. ’Cause it’s not just sleepy little towns. Listen, if you can do more than one thing at a time, you can have a polyamorous relationship. OK? If you can chew gum and walk, you can do more than one person.” And she admitted to experience in that arena. “If I seem like that, it’s because I’m good like that,” she added.
