TV Reboot News: Everything Known About Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

When Showtime’s series, Penny Dreadful was cut short after only three seasons. However, the show had a loyal fan base. Last year, it was rumored that it would be coming back. Every once in a while, little tidbits of new information surface about what is being called a “spiritual descendant” of the show. Titled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, learn everything known about the series and when it is expected to premiere.

New Setting: 1938 Los Angeles

The original Showtime series was set in Victorian-era England. This time around, expect a new location and time period. TV Guide reported that will be set in the seedy supernatural underworld of Los Angeles in the year 1938.

Description of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

The official description for the upcoming series teases that 1938 Los Angeles is deeply infused with tension, both social and political. When a horrific murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) gets a lot more than a typical murder case.

“… [Vega] is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles, from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”

In addition to Zovatto, Nathan Lane has been cast as Vega’s partner, Lewis Michener. he is described as a veteran cop who not only becomes Vega’s partner, but mentor as well. He is ruthless when accomplishing his goals and is “wise to the ways of the world.”

Religious Empires and Demons

Other characters include Sister Molly (Kerry Bishe), a charismatic radio evangelist. Miss Adelaide Finnister (Amy Madigan) will portray Sister Molly’s mother, who oversees the church, which is said to be a growing religious empire.

Magda (Natalie Dormer) is a supernatural demon who can take on the appearance of anyone. She is described as being clever, charismatic and chameleonic. While she can be a priceless ally, she is also teased as being dangerous as one’s enemy.

Penny Dreadful Original Cast Member Returns – But in a Different Role

In Penny Dreadful, Rory Kinnear played the Creature. The actor returns in this new installment, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. However, this time, he will be playing Dr. Peter Craft, a German pediatrician. However, playing doctor is not his only job. He also heads an organization that the doctor hopes will keep the United States away from the increased war threat in Europe.

TV Reboot News: Meeting the Vega Family

Since the murder case is going to affect Vega so deeply, it is only natural that it will extend into his personal life. We will meet his family, including younger brother Mateo Vega (Johnathan Nieves) and youngest sister Josefina Vega (Jessica Garza). Josefina is quiet and can be overlooked, but she holds a powerful spirit that is just waiting to be released.

Maria Vega (Adriana Barraza) will play the detective’s wife. She will stop at nothing to protect her children from the dangers of the world. She finds out that this isn’t limited to social politics, but the supernatural as well.

Finally, Adam Rodrigues will recur as the oldest child Raul Vega. He is a righteous union leader and serves as an advocate.

When Does Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Premiere?
