The complete Yellowstone tale has not yet been told but the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan has made it clear that the end is near, and we won’t be seeing nine seasons of it.
According to Showbiz Cheatsheet, Taylor Sheridan has explained that he has more Dutton family stories to tell “but the series will not go on indefinitely.” He said that he knows how it ends and that he’s “writing to that ending.”

Taylor Sheridan signs Big Deal for New Shows
Thanks to Yellowstone’s amazing success through these four seasons, Taylor Sheridan recently signed a $200 million deal with ViacomCBS to create five new shows over the next three years. In fact, the consummate writer has already created one prequel for Yellowstone, 1883, and introduced yet another spinoff of the series, 6666 in Season 4 of Yellowstone.
Sheridan also has the series, Mayor of Kingstown starring Jeremy Renner which airs on Paramount+. Kansas City starring Sylvester Stallone, and a series about West Texas oil workers called Landman are down the pike.
Taylor Sheridan Explains You Can’t Put ‘Yellowstone’ In Neutral
With all of these various projects demanding Sheridan’s attention, we can assume that either Yellowstone is nearing its end, or the show will flounder. The Sons of Anarchy veteran explained that “there’s only so much hovering one can do before the story starts to lose its locomotion,” adding that, “you can’t put it in neutral just because it’s successful.”
He went on to say that “[Yellowstone] will go as many years as it takes” for him to tell the story. But he added that there will not be nine seasons of it “no way.”
Though a Season 5 for Yellowstone has yet to be announced, one of the show’s stars, Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) let on in the Spring of 2021 that season 5 was already in production so, we can at least take comfort in that knowledge.
