Your favorite British shows will leave Netflix before you know it. Earlier this month, a Britbox spokesperson revealed that most of the popular British shows will be removed from the streaming platform. Britbox, a new streaming service from the BBC and ITV, first launched its service in the UK on Nov. 7. This new streaming platform is up against some pretty hefty competition with Amazon, AppleTV+, Hulu, and Netflix.
It also looks like this new streaming service could come in the crosshairs of Netflix, according to an Independent report. The platform is expected to have the largest collection of British television content on a single website. It’s bringing back classics BBC and ITV shows such as Keeping Up With Appearances and The Office. Britbox promises to offer thousands of hours of British content. Of course, that means most of that content would have to leave Netflix first.
ITV group communications and corporate affairs director Paul Moore revealed the shocking news in an interview with The Independent. He said that a “vast majority of British shows will no longer be on Netflix within the next year.” That’s because most of those BBC and ITV shows that are currently on Amazon and Netflix are on 12-month rolling contracts. The moment those contracts expire, those shows will appear on Britbox.
For example, The Office “will be coming back home next spring.” However, there are some shows that are in co-production between UK networks and Amazon or Netflix “can’t come back home,” according to Moore. Britbox won’t make that mistake ever again. Moore said that “going forward, we won’t license things to Netflix and Amazon in the first place because we now have a home, a streaming service in the UK.”

Moore wouldn’t reveal any more details about the decision. He said that BBC and ITV have “already been quietly” removing British content from Netflix “for the last few months.” That’s why fans can’t get their fix of Gavin & Stacey or Love Island. Britbox’s mission wants to be the home for all British content. But it has no plans to receive the rights to U.S. or international content as it’s only focused on UK shows.
