The Walking Dead Movie Is Expected to Go in ‘Wild New Directions’

The Walking Dead Movie Is Expected to Go in 'Wild New Directions'The Walking Dead is expected to be different from the series. For one, it will feature Rick Grimes, who is no longer on the AMC drama. Scott M. Gimple provided an update on what to expect. Aside from the teaser that provided more questions than answers at San Diego’s Comic-Con back in July 2019, the feature film will be “only in theaters” unlike the series itself. Entertainment Weekly sat down with Gimple to discuss The Walking Dead franchise, including the feature film.

Gimple explained why the movie will premiere “only in theaters” rather than a TV movie. According to the franchise chief content officer, this movie is the kind of movie that can only be enjoyed in theaters. “Eventually you won’t need a movie theater to see it, but more in line with how movies work,” Gimple added. He also revealed that there’s also a plan to release not one, but three films. The scale and budget are completely different for the films.

Fans can expect different production elements in these movies. That’s because everything is bigger on The Walking Dead but in a heightened sense, according to Gimple. “We are going in some wild new directions. Movies are a different beast than television,” Gimple said. “Television is like, boom, we’re done. Movies, to calibrate an hour and a half, two hours is no joke, and it’s been a lot of fun, but it’s a real challenge and we take it seriously for the fans.”

Gimple said that he hopes the films will “deliver something special” to the fans. He wants to make the movie worth seeing in theaters. The Walking Dead feature films will also do what the television series could never do. It could maim Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes; whose comic book character lost a limb early on in the series. It happened when the villainous Governor chopped off Rick’s right hand in the 28th issue, according to Comicbook.com.

But the Governor isn’t expected to appear in the film. If Rick is going to lose a limb, it could happen by a different villain or a walker. Fans will finally get to see what happened to Rick during his six-year disappearance. They will finally get answers as to why he couldn’t return to Michonne (Danai Gurira) and children Judith (Cailey Fleming) and RJ (Antony Azor). Neither AMC nor Universal Pictures has not announced a release date for The Walking Dead movie, but it’s still happening. What are your thoughts? Sound off below in the comments section.
