The Young And The Restless News: Former Head Writer And EP Maria Arena Bell Battling Cancer

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that a former showrunner is battling cancer. Maria Arena Bell shared on Instagram that she completed 19 rounds of radiation, showing off a certificate her doctor gave her. She added that women have it rough in Hollywood, often losing their job battling life-threatening infections and diseases.

Bell revealed that she had been battling cancer since April and completed 19 rounds of radiation. She didn’t disclose if she was in remission, only sharing how sad it is that many women lose their jobs for having cancer in show business.

“19 rounds of radiation DOWN! I haven’t told many people, but I’ve been fighting breast cancer since April- with a terrible post-op infection and all kinds of hurdles. I’m here to say I completed this step of the journey! I couldn’t have done it without my amazing family and friends,” Bell shared. “Working in Hollywood, I’ve seen firsthand how and why we can’t talk about it- you’ll lose jobs, or people will think you’re over: I will never forget the Sony exec who wanted to fire one of the Y and R writers for having breast cancer. Can we all be unafraid of speaking our truth- we are all going through things- let’s normalize cancer! It sucks, but there’s still so much I want to accomplish. Don’t count me out!”

Maria encouraged her followers with cancer to speak up and speak their truth. She said it isn’t fair for women to face punishment for taking care of themselves or needing medical treatments. She believes Hollywood can [should] do better, and it’s up to the public to hold them accountable.

Bell was the showrunner for Y&R from 2007-2012. She earned a Daytime Emmy for her part as the writer in 2011. In 2012, she was unexpectedly let go. Still, all these years later, Maria isn’t sure why Y&R fired her.
