In an interview with Alec Baldwin on his podcast “Here’s The Thing,” Peter Bergman opened up about his career and personal life. Known as Cliff Warner on “All My Children” and as Jack Abbott on “The Young and the Restless,” Bergman has a lot of things to share with Baldwin who also got his start as Billy Aldrich on “The Doctors.”

Master of Soap Operas

Dubbed by the host as an “undisputed master” of soap operas, Bergman shared his journey towards being the actor he is today. He auditioned for school plays, studied acting, auditioned for commercials, and tried his luck in theatre. He eventually landed a gig on AMC as Cliff back in 1979.

This role was a boon for the actor. He said, “What I didn’t know was this was the beginning of this wave of daytime craziness.” During that time, there were 13 soap operas and now it’s down to four.

Back then, all of the soaps were doing well but ABC’s “Love in the Afternoon” was “crazy.” He said, “There were 12, 13 million people watching us every day.”

So, when Bergman’s character was written off, he felt devastated. He explained how he found a home in the soap and that he considered everyone there as family.

“They let me know in late January and I worked until September 6. It was nasty and I wish I could tell you I was strong enough to pick myself up and dust myself off and get on to the next thing… I was thunderstruck by it.”

Moving to Y&R

He then moved to Los Angeles and landed a gig on another soap. This time he was taking over a role from Terry Lester who was leaving his character Jack Abbot behind on “The Young and the Restless.”

Bergman has always been amazed by the likes of David Canary and James Mitchell, but now he is already on their level.

“After 10 years of watching a couple guys have those roles, the role. I’ve got the role on this show. This is a mercurial character,” he explained.

“One day, the nicest brother anybody could ever have and the next day a despotic boss, a dreadful, venal, self-centered idiot. The next day, a careful, kind lover. It was one of the roles in daytime,” he continued.

Bergman has earned several nominations and awards for his performance on “All My Children” and “The Young and the Restless.” He got nominations for Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama and Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.
