The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Claire Newman (Hayley Erin) is doing everything reasonably possible. But her grandfather, the so-called Great Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), isn’t reasonable.
Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) is a proxy target. He represents a loathed, more modern version of Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). Genoa City, Wisconsin’s king, can’t stop himself from despising.
In the real world, something like this would never happen. Sure, captains of industry never engage in petty fights or pursue endless personal battles. Those misguided pursuits only exist on soap operas. Well, actually, no, that’s not true.
Genoa City, Wisconsin’s Exaggerated Reality
Victor and Jack have long waged war on each other because of a personality clash. Longtime fans recall that Jack and the late Brad Carlton (Don Diamont) once worked for Victor. But that was a long time ago.
Jack became Victor’s mortal nemesis when he fell in love with Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) and they married. Victor became Jack’s target when he accidentally caused Nikki to miscarry the baby she was carrying.
That child, John Abbott III (no actor was ever cast to play that role), died, and so the legendary daytime battle became legend.
Oh, there was Bergman’s improvisational brush past Braeden’s body, where Jack kicked Victor, when leaving him for dead in the Colonnade Room.
The scene where Victor collapsed on the floor with a heart attack remains one of this on-screen duo’s most extraordinary scenes among many.
Claire Newman Has Nowhere To Go
Claire wants to live with Kyle. She never anticipated that her grandfather would be stubborn and undermine her burgeoning relationship.
But Victor believes no man named Abbott is good enough for any woman in his family. His conversation with Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) at the GC Athletic Club reinforced a pervasive attitude.
Victor wants Billy to spill whatever he knows about Aristotle Dumas (no actor known to be cast for this role) in return for not smearing him.
Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) stands at the ready and is threatened by Victor not to sell his apartment to Claire and Kyle.
All of the above puts deep pressure on Claire, who is being forced to the edge. Rather than be pushed over, she’s likely to fight. Seeing her break from Victor and potentially Chancellor is a realistic possibility.
Jack Abbott Defends His Son
Jack can’t allow Victor to walk into Jabot’s executive suite and threaten Kyle to his face. The head of the Newman family, which purposely implies that Victor sees himself as the chief of an orchestrated crime syndicate, told Jack off in the Abbott’s corporate building.
There are no moral lines in Victor’s world. Jack pulled himself out of endless fights with Victor during the period following the Marco Annicelli (Bergman in a dual role) reveal.
But the basis of good drama is conflict, not resolution or enduring peace. So, Victor’s direct provocation will likely lead to Jack endorsing Kyle’s response and a joint offensive, retaliatory effort.
