The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) believes that his father was genuine at the end of his life and sought redemption. So, he forgave him and believed his story about obtaining a vast amount of wealth honestly.
Cane’s told numerous people, including Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), that Colin Atkinson’s (Tristan Rogers) terminal condition created a change of heart. Jill Abbott (Jess Walton) confirmed that as true during a tense conversation in Cane’s suite at the Genoa City Athletic Club, that he recently purchased using a small bit of the money Colin provided.
But a looming question remains. How did Colin obtain a fortune or build it in such a short amount of time?
Attempting To Steal Katherine Chancellor’s Inheritance
Cane was searching for his father toward the end of Daniel Goddard’s (the original Cane Ashby) run on the soap. The last viewers were aware, he was traveling the world, with scant mention of Colin.
Before that exit, Cane was suspected of attempting to steal the inheritance Devon Winters (Bryton James) received from his paternal grandmother, Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), after she passed. Time allowed Cane to be cleared, with Colin being revealed as the rogue.
That storyline appears to be the basis for Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) claim that Colin obtained his wealth amorally and illegally. Cane doesn’t want to believe it or knows the truth and isn’t saying.
Cane Ashby Probably Kept In The Dark
Two plot points can be true simultaneously. Colin is the scoundrel that Victor suggests, and he wants to make amends with his son.
Cane cared for his father during the last part of his life. That mattered to both men. Colin’s terminal condition surely created a different perspective than he’d had previously.
But Colin still could have been the same conniver he always was, or more exactly, he could have stolen a fortune to help Cane have a better life and not told him the truth. Cane believes Colin obtained the wealth honestly, but hasn’t said or proven why he believes him.
Victor Newman Always Finds A Way
Cane’s wealth gives him power, which Victor doesn’t like. Flynn’s character is a real threat to him and others in Genoa City, Wisconsin.
So, Victor and a potential alliance that includes Lily and possibly others either helps to stop Cane, or he might succeed in taking control of some or all of the legacy companies he’s targeting. Yet, there is an alternative outcome.
If Victor can prove that Colin unlawfully obtained his wealth, then it can be seized by the government, through legal means, or by submitting to the Moustache. That outcome would maintain GC’s status quo and also be something the fans could accept.
