Bryton James, who played Devon Hamilton on “The Young and the Restless,” was one of the many actors who paid tribute to the late Kristoff St. John after his untimely death earlier this year. He learned a lot from his on-screen father, Neil Winters, and they are lessons that he’ll forever cherish.
“With Kristoff, I witnessed somebody go through unimaginable circumstances and still choose to bring so much joy and happiness every day,” James told CBS Soaps In Depth. “I learned how to conduct yourself, be a professional person and a great human being. It’s a life lesson that I will never forget.”
The actor also had good things to say about the show’s tribute to St. John. “The show did an amazing job putting it together. And once the story was in place, it was up to all of us — not just me — to feel our real feelings for what had happened to our friend.

In a tweet, the show said: “One extraordinary man touched the lives of so many and will never be forgotten.” The post was made long with a video montage of some of the show’s characters mourning of Winter’s passing.
Shemar Moore reprised his role to memorialize his on-screen brother and real-life friend during the four episode tribute to St. John. In a post on his Instagram account, Moore described St. John as someone who has “touched so many of our LIVES in so many ways… Always made us LAUGH.”

In the run-up to the farewell arc, Moore said: “He was a bigger GOOFBALL than me and I wouldn’t be who I am today without the LOVE, ACCEPTANCE, and GUIDANCE of my BROTHER!!!”
During the Daytime Emmy Awards event last May, Moore thanked the show for their tribute to St. John. Christel Khalil also returned as Lilly Winters Ashy and Victoria Rowell as Drucilla Winters.
St. John died in February at the age of 52. He debuted on “The Young and the Restless” back in 1991 and portrayed Neil Winters until the time of his death.
