Young And The Restless News: Christian LeBlanc Teases Michael Baldwin’s Edgier, Dark Side

Attorney Michael Baldwin (Christian Le Blanc) had been on low profile during the past year until the Young and the Restless went into trial mode for J.T. Hellstrom’s (Thad Luckinbill) murder. In a recent interview, LeBlanc says that despite playing the character for a long time, Michael still has not lost his edge.

LeBlanc shared that he loved the scenes he worked on during the trial.

“The speeches that they gave Michael — the closing argument — was great. Courtroom scenes are fabulous for an actor, because you can play the theatrical element of it all. You can play it broader, a little wider. You can play Julius Caesar if you want!” he told Soaps In Depth.

Another thing that LeBlanc likes about playing his alter ego on the Young and the Restless is that he can tap on Michael’s edgier self. He can be “all gooey” with Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman), but his dark side is still there and that shows up in court.

“He has a razor-sharp intellect that he’s not afraid to weaponize in the courtroom. He can be kind of a jackass. He doesn’t suffer fools,” LeBlanc said. “Twenty years ago, I thought the core of Michael was a man who considers himself the smartest person in a really stupid town sometimes.”

The same still rings true today, as his character has to deal with people lying to him, including his friends. During J.T.’s trial, he felt constantly betrayed because Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), and Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) did not tell him the entire truth of what happened the night they thought they killed J.T.

“’Why are you treating me like just a lawyer?’—that was his thought. And that’s what made it so interesting,” the actor continued.

While Michael might be getting lesser screen time again, LeBlanc does not mind the downtime because there are other things that keep him busy these days.

The Emmy-award winning actor is working on an art show, and he just completed a children’s book, which he needs to revisit for some rewrites.
