Amazon Prime Video is ready to take people on a cryptic adventure to middle earth, the oft-talked about magical land that was created by fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien. You may get to see a hobbit, dwarves, elves, orcs and even human beings, but if you do see a ring, don’t forget the famous verses.
Amazon Announces Upcoming “Lord of the Rings” Movie Cryptically Titled “The Rings of Power”
Things are really starting to come together with Amazon’s latest reveal of the name of the series adaptation of Tolkien’s works. On Tuesday morning, Amazon unveiled the title with a video that shows liquid silver being forged into letters – letters that, when sufficiently cooled, revealed the words “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”.
This seems to be all the clues that Amazon is ready to drop off for now. However, it’s been previously revealed that the long-awaited series will take place in what Tolkien called Second Age, a vast period of Middle-earth history set thousands of years before the events of Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.
“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics,” showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement. “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”
In the video, a voice gives some details as to the reason for the existence of the twenty rings, lifted from Tolkien’s famous verse in the books:
“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky / Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone / Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die / One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne / In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”
The voice is currently unidentified, but it could possibly be the voice of Morfydd Clark, who’s been confirmed to play the Lady Galadriel. If it truly is Galadriel’s voice, it would be a welcome nod to Peter Jackson’s trilogy, which kicked off with his take on “The Lord of the Rings” with a prologue at the beginning of “The Fellowship of the Ring”, narrated by Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel.
The prologue covered the same period of Second Age history — which saw Sauron forge the 20 rings, including the all-powerful One ring, and his attempt to conquer Middle-earth.
